Jean-Luc Godard

It isn’t always easy to go against the grain, but sometimes one’s public critique of the norm can lead to their recognition as a genius. By rethinking the basic practices of film, challenging the conventions of traditional Hollywood, Godard was able to create a cinema of resistance where cinema was not merely a product, but rather a reflection of society and its politics. Godard is compared to people like Fitzgerald and Nietzsche, who had beliefs about society and culture that went against the mass. Even today, Godard still makes work that pleases himself first, rather than pleasing the mass. Which is important because, it is easy to be consumed by the media industry and its financial benefits, and think about its cultural and psychological impact last which I think outweighs the former.
